The Rise of Carewashing: Superficial Corporate Caring in the Face of Real Workplace Challenges
In today’s rapidly evolving business landscape, the term “carewashing” has emerged as a critical lens through which we examine corporate practices.
Carewashing refers to companies’ superficial adoption of caring initiatives designed more for public relations than substantive change. While these initiatives often come wrapped in appealing marketing campaigns, the reality for many employees, particularly those with neurodiverse conditions, remains largely unchanged.
This disconnect has led to a significant rise in employment tribunal cases, underscoring the inadequacy of carewashing as a genuine solution.
The Superficial Appeal of Carewashing
At first glance, announcing mental health days, wellness programs, and flexible working policies with much fanfare is a positive trend. These initiatives are spotlighted in corporate communications, projecting an image of a caring and supportive work environment.
